Generational Archives, the podcast

A post from Raina

For years I’ve been dreaming of being in conversation with my mother in a podcast format. In truth, we did a spot co-hosting a public radio show years ago, which remains one of the most fun collaborations that we have ever done. Radio booth, CDs, great conversation, and lots of laughter on the air! My mother recently reminded me that one of the tracks we played was from Celia Cruz and she transitioned to becoming an ancestor just two days after that.

Ancestors. That’s what we are talking about in this new podcast endeavor together through looking at archives, whether through one document or a category of documents. We are sharing resources about how to get to know more about our (and your peoples), some of the strategies that we have tried that might lend themselves to you.

Particularly as two Black women, two Black scholars, a mother-daughter living legacy, and coming from backgrounds in education and social work respectively, our work is also about gathering our community, embodying sankofa principles, the practice of looking back to gather, choose a good path for the future.

We really hope that you enjoy the episodes and bear with us as we work things out like uniformity in sound and such.

This first mini-episode is our introduction to the podcast and the reasons why.
